Communities Change Over Time & Spelling List #11

We're starting a new Unit - Communities Change Over Time where we will be studying different elements of culture and learn how technology and progress have influenced changes in culture over time.

The vocabulary words for this unit are:

community - a group of people working and living in the same area or from the same cultural background

culture - the shared beliefs, behaviors, and way of life of a group of people, or a certain time period or place in the past

civilization - a culture from the past that reached an advanced level of culture, science, industry, and government compared to other cultures of that time period

timeline - a chart that shows important events that occurred over a given period of time

artifacts - objects found by scientists and were used by people a long time ago

myths - stories told in ancient civilizations to explain natural events and to teach lessons

plague - a contagious disease that kills many people because there is no known cure

coat of arms - a shield design symbolizing values and characteristics of an individual family

historian - a person who researches past events and writes and talks about why events occurred and what changed as a result

transportation - how people get from one place to another

The books we will be reading are: Weslandia, A Street Through Time, Adventures in the Middle Ages, and Adventures in Ancient Egypt.
